Political Science & International Studies Internships & Opportunities

Political Science & International Studies students are encouraged to supplement their studies with work in the field. All students in the major must complete an internship during their course of study, and many International Studies students choose to intern overseas.

Campus Resources

Hill to Hill networking program

Because the program stresses the importance of building relationships, students have the opportunity to participate in the Hill to Hill networking program, which includes networking opportunities on Beacon Hill and a weeklong excursion to Capitol Hill, where current students meet with Stonehill alums and others to network.

Stonehill in Washington

The Stonehill in Washington Semester is a combination of work and study that brings Stonehill students to the nation’s capital for a semester. For almost 30 years Stonehill College has been placing students in competitive and high-profile internships.

Research Opportunities

Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience

Students who have completed their first year at Stonehill perform significant, publishable, full-time research in collaboration with an experienced faculty researcher.

Recent examples

  • Fiona Carroll ’16, Sara Marris ’16, Rebecca Lessard ’15 and Michelle Wozniak ’15 worked with William Ewell, associate professor Political Science, on “A Political History of the Appropriations Process.”
  • Althea Sylvia ’15 worked with Richard Finnegan, professor of Political Science and International Studies, on “Generational Attitudes toward Political Transformations in Ireland.”

Senior Honors Thesis

Seniors can apply to produce a thesis based on an independent research project of their own design and consisting of substantial original research. This can showcase research design skills critical for applying to graduate school, scholarships such as the Fulbright, and research positions.

Recent examples

  • Audrey del Rosario ’14, “Patterns of Policy-Making in Argentinian and Canadian Indigenous Communities.”
  • Samantha Smith ’14, “Public Works Project: Political Engagement in Small-Town Local Government.”
  • Justin Blaszczyk ’14, “The Rise of Drone Warfare: Military Technology in the Just War Tradition.”
“Lessons here are supplemented with an impressive variety of opportunities outside of the classroom. For me, this meant summer research with a professor, internships in Boston and Madrid, and walking the streets of Washington D.C. and the jungles of Guatemala.
This has prepared me for any path I choose to take after graduation, whether it be law school, Capitol Hill or abroad.”
 Joseph Masciangioli ’13
