Composting
Stonehill composts pre-consumer fruit and vegetable scraps from Roche Dining Commons and the Holy Cross Center cafeteria. Students and faculty are currently working to expand the composting program to include post-consumer material. The student-led Dorm Compost Program offers small dorm compost bins for residence halls and suites.
What is compostable?
- fruits and vegetables (raw or cooked)
- eggshells
Two pigs are living at the Farm who eat the compost and close the waste loop.
What is not compostable?
- meat and fat
- dairy
- oils
- liquids
- recyclable materials (glass, metal, plastic)
- bleached and/or inked paper products
- cleaning products/chemcals
- trash
- "compostable" plates, cups, and cutlery

Where can I compost?
The composting program only includes pre-consumer waste currently. Stay tuned, students and faculty are currently working on resolving this to include post-consumer compost as well.
Can I compost if I live in a residence hall?
Yes, the student-run Dorm Compost Program, which is supported by Students for Environmental Action (SEA), provides small compost bins in residence halls and suites, making it easy for students to compost on campus.
