Professor David Simon Honored by Academic Community
A leading figure in quantum optics, quantum field theory and mathematical physics, Simon was recently named the 2026 recipient of the Michael Horne Award for Distinguished Faculty Scholarship.
During a ceremony held on Tuesday, March 31, in Donahue Hall, Professor of Physics and Engineering David Simon received this year’s Michael Horne Award for Distinguished Faculty Scholarship. Established in tribute to a faculty member from the Department of Physics, the award recognizes professors who have made impactful intellectual contributions to their fields and to Stonehill College. It is one of the highest honors bestowed by the institution.
In a citation conferring the award, President John Denning, C.S.C., and Vice President for Academic Affairs Peter Ubertaccio highlighted the many ways Simon has integrated his scholarship into academic life at Stonehill.
“He has played a central role in interdisciplinary program development, mentored numerous undergraduate researchers, and created learning pathways that connect physics, engineering, and applied photonics,” they noted. “His work demonstrates how faculty scholarship can both advance a field and shape the next generation of thinkers.”
