Father Theodore Hesburgh, C.S.C.

In his remarkable career, the late Father Theodore Hesburgh, C.S.C., president of the University of Notre Dame from 1952-87, received 150 honorary degrees, including one from Stonehill. In 1972, the College awarded Fr. Hesburgh an honorary doctor of humanities degree. He also gave the Commencement address, urging the graduates to exercise confidence, compassion and commitment in the struggle to correct the ills of society.
