Supergems Shine in Stonehill’s Carole Calo Gallery

September 9, 2016

The Carole Calo Gallery at Stonehill College will feature New England artists, Clark Derbes, Leah Piepgras, Susan Richards, and Will Sears from September 6 to October 7.

The exhibit, Supergems, is a collection of assemblages, collages, paintings, and sculptures inspired by gemstones, crystals, and natural geometry.

Richards’ paintings and collages focus on single crystals based on actual minerals. One is as struck by the deft and luscious slides of color and paint as with the wonder and magic of holding a geode in one’s hand.

Derbes’ perspective-bending painted alterations on hand-carved chunks of faceted wood playfully nod to geometric abstraction, quilts, folk art, and renaissance tiled floors.

Sears re-uses the brightly colored text of cut up old signs and reassembles them to be new urban diamonds on the wall. Beguiling, they appear to be flat designs and suggest deep space in the same way as Indian miniatures.

Leah Piepgras presents an arrangement of gold and silver flattened gems that reflect our polished images back to us. They beg to ask whether we can only ever reflect a single facet of our whole self while also acknowledging the timeless and ephemeral.
