Families Race for Good Cause

Members of the Stonehill community along with their families used the College's 384-acre campus to burn some calories and raise funds for charity at Saturday's third annual Stonehill Family Weekend 5k Road Race.

Employees of the College along with students raced together with their families to raise funds for the Massachusetts Hospital School Foundation at the increasingly popular event.

"We have received comments about how much fun this is for families to do together and how nice it is to run through different parts of campus people have never seen before," said race organizer and Wellness Coordinator at Stonehill Jessica Greene. "We have received a number of requests to keep this a long standing tradition."

The race's 3.1-mile course took participants throughout the campus, starting and ending near the Shields Science Center.

Greene stated participation has steadily grown each year with this year's race drawing over 100 participants.

Greene reports the race raised $840 for the Central Asia Institute in 2008 and $1185 for The March of Dimes last year as she finalizes this year's amount for The Massachusetts Hospital School (MHS).

The MHS provides medical, habilitative, rehabilitative, recreational, educational and vocational services to children and young adults with multiple disabilities.

Greene says the ACES (Active Concerned Educated Students) club and the Health and Wellness Office personally select the charities each year.

"This year's charity was picked on my suggestion after I visited the Hospital School for a potential service learning project next spring. I was struck by how much good they do for the children who attend the school and wanted to help out in some way," notes Greene.

The Family Weekend 5k Race was created to be a fun event students could participate in with their parents, siblings and friends while getting the added benefit of promoting physical fitness and healthy lifestyle choices at the same time says Greene.

"Physical activity not only helps give us energy and boosts our moods but it also helps aid in weight maintenance by burning calories. Most runners will burn 300-400 kcal during a 5k according to www.livestrong.com. The exact amount of calories burned will depend upon your weight and the intensity of the run," says Greene.
