The success of the Alumni Auction wouldn't be possible without the help and assistance of Linda (Demarkles) Sarro '86. For that, the Alumni Association honored Sarro for her years of commitment and service to the auction with the 2011 Alumni Service Award at the Alumni Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on Sunday, November 20.
Presenting the award to Sarro was Alumni Council President Cathy Campbell '96 and speaking on behalf of the Auction Committee was former chair Bill McAndrew '70.
Since the inaugural Alumni Auction in 1994, Sarro has served as an enthusiastic and decidedly behind-the-scenes volunteer for the last 18 years. She creates the extensive program booklet for the auction which is arguably one of the most meticulous tasks in planning the event.
Sarro has also provided valuable support at the auction itself over the last few years, volunteering her time to assist with on-site check-out, which includes entering all bids received into a computer database as they occur, printing invoices, assisting guests, tallying totals and last but certainly not least, helping resolve problems which may arise.
"Linda's organizational and management skills are exceptional. When you combine those with her knack for working well with others and under pressure, you have the keys to her success as a volunteer. And, that's why her fellow alums hold her in such high regard. They know how good she is," says Director of Alumni Affairs Anne Sant '88.
Over the course of 17 auctions, more than 5,500 items have been donated, more than 3,300 alumni and friends have attended, and more than $800,000 has been raised for student scholarships at the College.
Sarro, an Easton resident, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Administration at Stonehill in 1986. Her husband Michael, also a graduate of the Class of 1986, and their three daughters have also volunteered their time to help with the auction.
The Alumni Service Award is presented annually by the Alumni Council to recognize graduates who have worked for the betterment of the College and the Alumni Association. Sarro is the 38th recipient of the award.
