Digital Media Production at Stonehill

The Digital Media Production major and minor provide students with hands-on experience in the creation of visual screen media.

Beginning in Summer 2025, we will undergo a major renovation of the existing media “green room” in the Duffy Academic Center, which supports our expansion of DMP into a full major and develops a more integrated arts community on campus, where students pursuing storytelling with video can take classes and work side by side with students in all areas that foster creative expression.

Stonehill’s current studio and lab spaces are outdated and lack the modern technology essential for students to gain the hands-on experience needed for success in digital media. While our facilities are functional and our inventory allows us to support the basic needs of our digital media, communication, and journalism programs, our goal of expanding the program and welcoming more students is challenged by the limitations of our current studio and classroom spaces.

Grant from the Alden Trust Boosted by Alumni Giving

The renovation kicks off immediately, spurred by a generous grant from the George I. Alden Trust—a long-time partner of Stonehill with deep ties to our academic growth. Alden Trust grant funds will be directed to significant technological upgrades to the computers and monitors in the dedicated DMP classroom to technology designed for 4K video editing.

With this confirmed support of the Alden Trust, our alumni and friends can elevate the impact of this grant by helping expand access to field equipment for our students, especially those who cannot afford their own personal equipment. With your support, we can improve all facets of the studio, control room, computer lab, equipment inventory, and the space for securing and lending it out, which will allow instructors to teach with technology consistent to what employers expect to see and, more importantly, allow students to create more engaging and sophisticated work.

To complete the full scope of the technology and equipment upgrades needed, we seek to supplement the Alden Trust’s grant with support from alumni and friends like you!

Improving our Media Production Studio and Classroom

The upgrade is essential to the existing communication program at Stonehill, where the digital media studio and classroom are essential parts of professional and creative development.

In majors and careers like DMP and broadcast journalism, learning with current applications and better equipment gives students a competitive advantage in the field. Not only does learning with the “tools of the trade” allow students to create more compelling and technologically sophisticated content, but it also tells potential employers that graduates are familiar and comfortable working with the applications and equipment that constitute the “industry standard.”

The films and scripts students produce over their time in the DMP and Journalism programs will be the backbone of their creative portfolios. Whether they want to pursue their Hollywood dreams in entertainment or careers in journalism, advertising, marketing, publicity work or public relations, students will leave Stonehill with a diverse set of creative projects ready to show potential investors, employers, or graduate school admission committees as they pursue their career goals.

A standout program graduate, Conor Soucy ’19, had his first feature-length film, shot partially on Stonehill’s campus, acquired by a distributor after a successful film festival screening. The film he wrote and directed, Dead Whisper, played in select theaters before being released on streaming platforms (Amazon Prime and Apple TV). He often speaks about the profound impact that experience had on him—confirming his desire to pursue a career in motion pictures. The updated space will create even more pathways to success for current and future students like Conor.

As a Journalism minor and someone that is interested in all sorts of creative tasks, my DMP class was a beneficial experience for me. I gained work that now makes up part of my portfolio, and I now possess skills in video editing programs, as well as skills in how to work and record videos properly. Having access to more advanced and expanded technology during my final year at Stonehill will mean a lot in my professional future because it will give me the opportunity to offer knowledge that can complement a team with updated information that could really escalate growth for any company or organization I will be part of. Whether I pick Journalism, non-profit or publishing work after my graduation, I know that I will be growing outreaches for all of these areas with technological and creative skills.
