Athletics at Stonehill

Lacrosse

The Stonehill College Athletics Department seeks to pursue excellence in the form of academic and competitive success, community engagement, and whole-person development. The generous support of donors like you plays a vital role in the achievement of these goals.

Student-athletes make up roughly 20% of the undergraduate student body, and central to their experience is the formation of the whole person. It is our intent to develop our student-athletes into transformational leaders for life.

So much of our success is directly related to the support of our steadfast community of alumni, parents and friends—who believe a strong athletic program, paired with Stonehill’s tradition of academic excellence, only serves to augment the College’s rank and reputation.

Stonehill student-athletes are special because of their drive to be first-class in both athletics and academics. Our student-athletes are competitive, hard working, and passionate individuals eager for success on and off the field.

About the GoHill Fund

GoHill Fund

A quality collegiate athletic program has always relied upon successful collaboration to achieve goals, and it is no different at Stonehill. Through the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes and coaches and the generosity of our alumni, Stonehill’s athletics program continues to produce incredible results.

Thanks to your generosity, the GoHill Fund supports 475 Stonehill College student-athletes across 23 varsity sports. We also have been able to establish new programs like women’s golf, swimming, and ice hockey. These expansions allow us to offer a more diverse and unique slate of sports for all students to enjoy.

Support for the GoHill Fund advances the development of Stonehill Athletics – providing the means to grant scholarships, improve facilities, fund out-of-region travel, and foster the growth and development of students and staff.

The Impact of Your Gift

Generous donations from the community are what allow our athletics department to pursue our vision and support our student-athletes in every aspect of their game – on and off the field. Gifts support athletic programs, individual team expenses, and athletic travel. In addition, over $3 million in aid is awarded to support student-athletes annually, allowing them the freedom to focus on their craft while balancing the demanding academic expectations.

Gifts to the GoHill Fund are vital to our success because they provide opportunities for our student-athletes to achieve and represent Stonehill College as the first-class academic institution it is.

Eli Gardner, Head Football Coach

The generosity of our donors is the fuel which creates opportunities for our student-athletes to pursue their passion and excel athletically and academically. The facilities we are fortunate to have on our campus, the scholarship aid we are able to award and the staff who teach and mentor our student-athletes are all possible in large part due to those who believe in the power of athletics and donate to Stonehill Athletics to support the growth and development of our students.

Stonehill Student-Athlete Success Stories

Billy Wingo, Class of 2019

Stonehill Football

From his time as a dominant linebacker on the Skyhawks' football team for four years, Billy Wingo learned how to take a hit for the team. However, he would discover a whole new challenge when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer while still in school. Wingo went on to fight through chemo treatments living by the mantra he heard from a friend and fellow student – “beneficial pain.” Just like taking a hard hit on the football field can propel the team forward towards success, Wingo believed that his battle with cancer taught him the importance of life and the power of perseverance. While he kept up with his Stonehill coursework and underwent chemotherapy, Wingo decided to create his own non-profit organization, aptly named Beneficial Pain. He explained, “In many ways, cancer was a blessing... When I got diagnosed, I recalled that idea of beneficial pain, and it played right into my approach to battling the disease. This concept is what we wanted our company to be about.”

Life as an Alum

Impressively, Wingo graduated from Stonehill on time with his fellow class of 2019 despite the hurdles he faced along the way. Today, Wingo is cancer-free and the CEO of Beneficial Pain which totes the slogan, “Pain is inevitable, make it beneficial.” The non-profit hosts fundraisers and creates partnerships with other community organizations with the goal of listening to people’s stories and lifting each other up. Their support goes beyond victims of cancer, Wingo says that they help people dealing with most anything – addiction, anxiety, relationship problems, sports injuries, obesity, LGBT issues and so on.

Sophia Poveda, Class of 2021

Stonehill Volleyball

In her sophomore year, volleyball player Sophia Poveda was named to the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars second team, as published in the April edition of Diverse: Issues In Higher Education magazine. The publication sponsors the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards to honor undergraduate students who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for his sport, U.S. colleges and universities are invited to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership.

Poveda, who earned a 3.63 cumulative grade-point average as an Economics major and a double minor in Political Science and business, was one of three student-athletes from the Northeast-10 Conference to be named on the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar volleyball teams. Poveda volunteered her time as a counselor with the Ace's Girls Program, which is a female empowerment program for local youth. She was a peer mentor at Stonehill with the Moreau Honors Program and was involved with the Stonehill Leadership Development Series for student-athletes.

I chose Stonehill because the photos and videos of the campus gave me a familial feeling - like it could be my home. It's an honor being a part of the foundation for this team. I can't wait to see how our little team grows into a huge family. Receiving support for our team would warm my heart; this team and this sport mean the world to me and to have others' support of our dreams and aspirations make all our hard work even more worth doing.

When the student-athletes feel supported, it only enhances the supportive nature of our community. We tell the athletes that this team "is bigger than the roster". What this means is...there are contributions that extend beyond practice. Knowing that people care enough to contribute to the GoHill Fund speaks volumes to the student-athletes. It shows them that they are important and that the Stonehill "community" is not only on campus but far outside the gates.
