The Martin Institute Welcomes Jeffrey Boutwell
The writer, historian and science policy specialist will discuss his 2025 book focused on politician George S. Boutwell.

About the Program

During this event, Jeffrey Boutwell will explore his 2025 book Boutwell: Radical Republican and Champion of Democracy. The work focuses on his ancestor, George S. Boutwell of Massachusetts, the Commonwealth's youngest-ever governor in the 1850s. Having helped create the Republican Party in the 1850s, he became a close ally and friend of presidents Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. Boutwell's book is as much a history of 19th century America as it is a critique of the failures of governance during a turbulent and formative period in American history.
