About the Writers
Maureen E. Boyle was an award-winning crime reporter in New England for decades, earning several national and regional awards. She is also the author of three true-crime novels, including Shallow Graves, which was honored by the Public Safety Writers Association. In 2023, she published Child Last Seen: The Search for Patty Desmond, a gripping account of a tragic cold case that was solved after decades.
Jan Brogan is the author of The Combat Zone: Murder, Race and Boston’s Struggle for Justice. The work chronicles the 1976 murder of Harvard football player Andrew Puopolo in Boston’s old Combat Zone, the two trials that followed, with nearly opposite verdicts, and the impact on the city and on criminal justice. The book also explores survivor grief and the fine line between justice and revenge.
Joanna Schaffhausen has a doctorate in psychology, which reflects her long-standing interest in the brain―how it develops and the many ways it can go wrong. Previously, she worked as a scientific editor in the field of drug development. Prior to that, she was an editorial producer for ABC News, writing for programs such as World News Tonight, Good Morning America and 20/20.
