An increasing number of education experts argue that teacher education in the United States needs to be radically transformed and that we need powerful ways to rethink its logics, goals, metrics and practices as they relate to equity and social justice.

The Equity, Diversity and Justice in Education (EDJE) Scholars Teacher Residency and Mentoring Grant, funded* by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), seeks to meet that challenge through the improvement of recruitment and retention of a diverse teacher workforce.

This initiative is focused on building the internal expertise of schools/districts by training mentors to support diverse teacher candidates committed to urban education/diverse settings/education deserts. It allows us to partner EDJE scholars (teachers and prospective teachers) with mentor teachers in EDJE partner schools. Mentors who work with program participants will be offered tuition remission for a 15-credit Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity graduate certificate.

*Pending state approval

Partner Districts

EDJE grant benefits are currently exclusive to scholars and mentors in the following school systems:

  • Easton School District
  • League School of Greater Boston
  • Randolph School District

Your dedication to programs such as the Stonehill Teacher Residency Program (STR) has allowed us to offer quality educational pipelines to our employees of color. The degree programs you have developed are extraordinary. We wholeheartedly support the EDJE Program.

Program Philosophy & Outcomes

  • Embrace teaching practices that foster social justice and democracy
  • Lead by making education accessible and holding high standards for all learners
  • Elevate student voices and perspectives in education
  • Act purposefully to continue to learn and contribute to the profession
