For six very influential years during the 1970s, Bill Braun served as the Director of Holy Cross Center residence hall, which is more commonly called the Sem as it was a seminary in years past.

Through his leadership and example, Braun, who also taught philosophy and served as Assistant Dean of Students, set the tone for life at the Sem, which offered an experience based on communication, sensitivity, shared responsibility and a belief in the common good.

Alumni who lived in the Sem during the seventies and colleagues who worked with Braun, now retired, hold him in high regard. That is why a scholarship, which will benefit Stonehill students, has been established in his name.

“Academically qualified and financially deserving students who are dedicated to inspiring the personal development of others and contributing to a more compassionate, human environment will be ideal candidates for the Braun scholarship,” said Gift Planning Officer Sharon Doyle.

As Director of Holy Cross, Braun developed the Sem as a place where students could explore and test their ideas while mastering skills that might move society closer to justice and compassion.

At the recent Sem reunion, Louise (Simmons) Zamiara ’79 said that when she recalls living at the Sem and her Stonehill education, Bill Braun inevitably comes to mind.

“Bill has had a huge influence on me. He is blessed with a gift of gentleness, one that engages you and invites to reflect deeply on how you want to live your life. As a friend, a mentor and father figure, he passed on so many precious life lessons, ones that I treasure. He created a great sense of community for all of us,” explained Zamiara.

After Stonehill, Braun became a successful organizational development professional. For many years he lived in Easton and has remained in touch with many of his Stonehill friends. He and his wife Linda (Faria) Braun ’72 attended the recent Sem reunion.
