Monday Morning Update

January 29, 2018

LAB WORK: As Penn State Professor Russell Scaduto ’77 considered retirement after decades of research in cellular and molecular physiology, he grappled with what to do with his scientific equipment. Then an article caught his attention and, before long, he was meeting with Physics Professor Ruby Gu and Chemistry Professor Cheryl Schnitzer. Find out what happened next

GRIPPING MEMOIR: A German-Catholic of Jewish heritage married to an “Aryan” German, Erna Becker-Kohen kept a diary of the persecution she and her husband experienced under the Nazis. History Professor Kevin Spicer, C.S.C. and Martina Cucchiara of Bluffton University have edited and translated Kohen’s gripping memoir into English. We have six copies of their book, The Evil That Surrounds Us. Email to get yours!

PAYING ATTENTION: Prayer, for Professor Emeritus Chet Raymo, is “Paying attention and looking at the world deeply and describing what you see.” Notre Dame Magazine recently profiled Raymo, an ND grad, and his 50-year career at Stonehill exploring the interplay between the spiritual and scientific ways of looking at the world. Read their profile of Professor Raymo.

LIFE'S GOALS: “One of Aristotle’s deepest insights is that living a good life requires a clear sense of our goals. It’s not enough to have a vague wish; we need to figure out what we want and then see how everything else relates to it,” said Philosophy Professor Anna Lannstrom. Want to shrink that gap between what you do and what really matters to you? Check out her blog

PRE-COLLEGE PROGRAM: Rising high school juniors & seniors accepted into Summer@Stonehill program in July take challenging three-credit, college-level courses by our professors in computer science, fine arts, political science, and psychology.
