Every student must fulfill the first-year writing (FYW) requirement as part of our general education curriculum. To help us determine which course instructor and topic would be the best fit for you, you must complete the College Writing Preparedness Survey and provide a brief (250-500 words) writing sample. A small team of faculty will review your responses and share this information with your first-year writing instructor. Providing this information will assist us in evaluating whether you would benefit from a course with additional support as you transition to college writing expectations.

How to Complete the College Writing Preparedness Survey and Sample

The College Writing Preparedness Survey and Sample consists of a series of questions and a brief writing sample (minimum 250 words).

To complete the survey:

  1. Access the College Writing Preparedness Survey and Sample here.
  2. Your credentials for the assessment will be the same username and password you use to log into your Application Status Page. If you do not remember your password, please use the Forgot Your Password link on the login page.
  3. Answer all assessment questions, and click the Submit button at the bottom of the page.
  4. We expect that the assessment will take less than an hour to complete. If you need more time to complete the assessment, you may utilize the Save for Later button at the bottom of the page.
