Stonehill employees are all responsible for securing not only their own information, but also the personally identifiable information (PII) of students and other employees. Criminals use this information for identity theft, which is why the college has a policy that strictly prohibits storing any PII data on laptops, tablets, smartphones, USB keys, or other portable devices without authorization.
PII is defined by Massachusetts law as a person’s first name and last name or first initial and last name in combination with one or more of the following:
- Social Security Number
- Driver’s License Number or state-issued Identification Card Number
- Financial account number, or credit or debit card number
To help identify if you have PII stored on your computer please use Spirion (formerly Identity Finder) to scan your computer. Once the scan is complete, it gives you a report on any PII data on your computer, with options on how to secure it.
