Workshop: Tenure & Promotion (Maria Curtin)

Thursday, May 19 | Duffy 114 | 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Geared to faculty who are contemplating applying for tenure and promotion, tenure, or promotion. The criteria, the process, and how to put together an application package will be discussed as well as any questions or concerns faculty might have. The workshop will be led by Maria Curtin. Faculty recently tenured and/or promoted will share their experiences through the process.

B or Not a B: Minimizing Student Complaints about Grades

Grading student work is an important part of our pedagogical toolbox. Grades provide one important signal to students of how they are progressing through a course and a program of study, hold students accountable for their academic studies, and help them understand their strengths while encouraging them to focus on areas where they need to improve. Moreover, students are increasingly requesting grades be posted on E-learn. So, what are effective ways to set up grading schemes to help our students? Are there discipline-specific grading best practices? What tools do we have available to us to help us with our grading? Join Bettina Scholz, Rob Rogers, Chris Ives, Nick Block, Jane Nash, Jan Harrison, Scott Hamlin, and others for a round table discussion of the pedagogy of grading. Schedule a follow-up consultation with an educational technologist for later in the afternoon to discuss how best to use our tools to meet your grading goals.

Tour the Production Studio

Thursday, May 19 and Friday, May 20 | Duffy 208B | 10:00-11:00 a.m.

This is a fun 30-minute tour and demonstration. We have all of the resources available to produce a high quality basic video, such as an instructor introduction, as well as sophisticated equipment for a complex TV studio shoot with backgrounds, green screen capability and a teleprompter for the more formal productions, e.g. Skynews. Watch or participate in the creation of a 30 second video. No experience necessary! We are also scheduling private recording sessions in the afternoon if you would like to experiment with recording yourself or consult with an expert on what is possible.

Workshop: Strategies for Grant Seekers I (Bonnie Troupe)

Bonnie Troupe (Academic Development) and a panel of recent faculty grant recipients will share strategies and resources for faculty seeking grant funds.  With an emphasis on “getting started,” potential funding sources and an overview of proposal components will be shared.  Faculty will also have the option to register to receive funding updates through the Faculty Alert feature of the Grants Resource Center.

Workshop: Strategies for Grant Seekers II (Bonnie Troupe)

Thursday, May 19 | DisCo, MacPháidín Library | 2:45-4:00 p.m.

With an emphasis on “next steps,” participants will learn about strategies to strengthen grant proposals for submission – or resubmission.  The session will including a discussion of “who the reader is.” In addition to gaining a deeper understanding for how reviews are handled, attendees will learn the steps for becoming grant proposal reviewers themselves. Bonnie Troupe (Academic Development) will share this and other strategies for those a bit further along in the grant seeking process.

IT and Library Consultations

Staff from both IT and Reference are available for a variety of one-on-one consultations regarding technology and resources. Have a question about one of the library databases? Interested in learning more about Qualtrics? Trying to get started with the gradebook or analytics in eLearn? Do you want to talk with a librarian about incorporating additional research training into your students’ assignments? We are available to meet with you about these topics and more. When signing up, please provide a few times during the afternoon when you are available. You will hear from an IT staff member or librarian to confirm your consultation time.

Office 365 Calendar Functions for Department Chairs (Jan Harrison)

How to use Office 365 to save you time and help you in your role as chair. Using the calendar to schedule meetings with faculty staff and students; Outlook groups for collaborative projects with members of your department; using the cloud for storing documents so they can be accessed from any device and many other features. We recommend you bring your laptop, let Jan know if you need to borrow a computer.

Writing in the Digital Age (Todd Gernes and Scott Hamlin)

Digital and networked technologies are dramatically changing the way we read, write, and think. They are reshaping literacy, learning, and ways of knowing. Blogging and social media tools have made self-publishing and public writing more accessible, while digital audio and video stories have become easier to produce, making multimedia a kind of native parlance.  Twitter has made writing briefly and concisely essential, and tools like Office365 and Google Drive have opened new avenues for collaborative writing. So, what does this mean for our students and the way that we teach them to write? What does writing mean in this context? What forms of writing should we be exposing them to?


Join facilitators Todd Gernes and Scott Hamlin for a round table discussion where we will look at how writing practices shape and are shaped by our digital environment.  

Library Session: Introducing Yewno Beta (Cheryl McGrath)

Library director Cheryl McGrath will be giving an overview of the changes that have taken place in these first 15 years of the 21st century to show what a 21st-century library is becoming. Part of the presentation will be a demonstration of a new discovery and exploration research product called Yewno that Stonehill has the unique opportunity to be a beta partner as the software is developed. We will work with the Faculty who sign up for the session to develop specific searches using the research and teaching topics faculty are interested in pursuing.

Partnering with CWAA Writing Consultants (Devon Sprague)

Do your students struggle with writing? Are they anxious about the quality of their work? The CWAA’s writing consultants and fellows are trained to assist students at any stage in the process with assignments from any discipline. Learning Analytics (Task Force Members)

What is Learning Analytics and how can we use its data? Come see a demonstration of Learning Analytics for Learn by Bettina Scholz and Mike Sale and the faculty in the task force, Jegoo Lee, Dinos Mekios, Heather Perry, and Gene Quinn in a discussion on the ethical use of this information. Your feedback will be taken into consideration to develop recommendations and policies to be adopted by the institution as faculty, advisors and administrators consider the use of Learning Analytics.

Dr. Davis, from the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Higher Education, will lead faculty and staff through a series of interactive lectures and workshops focusing on some of the following topics: consciousness-raising diversity experiences for faculty and staff, workshops on culturally responsive teaching, culturally relevant curricula, and engaging diverse learners.

Exploration of ways in which we can affect change to address students requests outlined in the letter from SGA- what can departments do to address these five points submitted by SGA? Tables will be set up by department/disciplines to discuss our curriculum, responding to incidents in the classroom, changing language and communicating with diverse students in a more productive way.
