The original Stonehill College seal was designed circa 1951 by Brother Barnabus O'Toole, C.S.C., who was "secretary, housekeeper and sacristan" during the early years of the College.

The request for an official seal came from Stonehill's first students, and Brother Barnabus found inspiration in the crests of the Holy Cross Fathers and sister-school Notre Dame University, incorporating similar symbols and the College's motto, Lux et Spes: Light and Hope.

Given that the Congregation of Holy Cross founded Stonehill in 1948, it is only natural to find elements of the Congregation's identity within the College's crest.

What Does It Mean?

You've seen it many times, on class rings, book covers, school pennants - but haven't you wondered what it was all about and why this little emblem is now an integral part of Stonehill?

When Stonehill was entering its second year, a group of students went to the President and requested that an official seal of the college be drawn. Brother Barnabus, C.S.C., who is a member of the mission band, was asked to draw a rough draft, and a professional artist completed the work.

The Official Interpretation:

  • The cross and open book are symbols of Christ, the Divine Teacher.
  • The cross and anchors are a symbol of the Congregation of Holy Cross.
  • The star is the symbol of the Eastern Province of Our Lady of Holy Cross.
  • Lux et Spes, the three Latin words written on the book, is the college motto - Light and Hope.
  • The hill represents the hill on which the college is built.
  • The purple and white are the official colors of the school.
