Leadership

Fr. John DenningStonehill College is led by Rev. John Denning, C.S.C., who took office as the College’s tenth President in 2013. From 2007 to 2013, Fr. Denning guided Stonehill’s Student Affairs Division, collaborating with others on campus to ensure that a culture of learning permeates all areas of college life. Previously, he served as the College’s first Vice President for Mission, establishing that department and launching initiatives to enhance Catholic identity at the College. He began his service at the College in 2000 as its Director of Campus Ministry.

Prior to his arrival at Stonehill, Fr. Denning served as Campus Minister at the Catholic Center at Bridgewater State University; teacher, coach, and chaplain at Coyle & Cassidy High School in Taunton; and Vocations Director for the Congregation of Holy Cross. He is a trustee of King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, PA, another Congregation of Holy Cross institution. Also active in local affairs, Fr. Denning serves on the boards of My Brother’s Keeper in Easton and Father Bill’s & MainSpring Coalition for the Homeless in Brockton.

A Rhode Island native, Fr. Denning graduated from LaSalle Academy in Providence and earned a bachelor of arts degree from Tulane University in New Orleans. He holds a master of divinity degree from the University of St. Michael’s College in the University of Toronto and a doctorate in higher education from the University of Massachusetts Boston. He entered the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1983 and was ordained as a Holy Cross priest in 1987. 

Peter UbertaccioPeter Ubertaccio was appointed Vice President for Academic Affairs in May of 2023 after serving on an interim basis since January 2023. In this role, he oversees all college operations directly pertaining to academic programming, faculty, and academic administration. 

Since June 2021 until returning to Stonehill, Peter was the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Caldwell University. Prior to that, he served Stonehill College as a distinguished academic and administrator for nearly two decades. He held several roles on campus including associate professor of political science, chair of the Department of Political Science and International Studies, and director of the Joseph Martin Institute for Law & Society. Later, he was the founding dean of the Thomas & Donna May School of Arts & Sciences.

An expert on American political development, political parties, and institutions, his scholarly work has been featured in the Routledge Handbook of Political Management, Winning Elections with Political Marketing and the Routledge Handbook of Political Marketing. With Brian Cook of Clark University he contributed to the centennial issue of the American Political Science Review with an analysis of Woodrow Wilson’s contribution to the field of political science, “Wilson’s Failure: Roots of Contention About the Meaning of a Science of Politics.” He is the author of two career guides with CQ/Sage press for undergraduates studying politics.

He is a frequent commentator on Massachusetts and national government and politics, appearing in the Boston Globe, the New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Boston Herald, The Hill, Huffington Post, Politico and BBC. He has been a regular political analyst on GBH and New England Cable News and has been interviewed on Marketplace on American Public Media, Greater Boston with Emily Rooney, WRKO, WATD, Fox 25 News, WBUR's Radio Boston and WMEX.

He is the president of the Board of Directors of the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum Foundation, and a former member of the Board of Advisors for Pope John Paul II High School in Hyannis, Massachusetts and the Academic Program Committee of Boston College's Woods College.  

He holds a B.A. in politics from the Catholic University of America and a Ph.D. in politics from Brandeis University.
