Something Borrowed, Something Purple
This Valentine’s Day, fall head over ‘hills’ in love with these grads’ tales of wedded bliss.
Stonehill College has served as the birthplace of many great love stories. Countless couples have forged long-lasting bonds while living and learning on our campus over the last seven decades. In celebration of the role Stonehill has played in bringing them together, many alumni choose to get married in the Chapel of Mary.
“Stonehill doesn’t just educate students’ minds, but also their hearts. We enjoy helping our graduates and other community members open their hearts to one another through the sacrament of holy matrimony,” said Rev. Anthony Szakaly, C.S.C., director of Campus Ministry.
This Valentine’s Day, we asked some of our Stonehill sweethearts to share what it was like falling in love and exchanging vows on campus.
In keeping with tradition, Margaret (Flynn) Greelish ’17 and William Greelish ’18 did not want to see each other on the day of their wedding before walking down the aisle. They read personal vows while separated in a corner of Donahue Hall prior to their ceremony.
There's No Place Like Home
Margaret (Flynn) Greelish ’17 and William Greelish ’18 have always associated their relationship and their time at Stonehill College with the concept of home.
“We see our marriage as an opportunity for us to growing individually, but ultimately grow together,” they said. “In the ways we feel at home at Stonehill, we also feel at home with one another, feeling comforted, at peace and joyful in our relationship.”
The bride and groom chose the campus as the backdrop for their big day for this reason. “Stonehill is not only the place we found each other, but the place we both grew on our own and together,” they said. “It’s the place we both consider to be home. It brings us comfort and joy.”
The couple got hitched on September 26, 2021. Donahue Hall served as the setting of many memorable moments that took place on that fateful day.
“We had our rehearsal dinner up in Donahue and we got ready there too, which was really special for us to be able to do that,” the couple said. “And we didn’t want to see each other the morning of, but we were able to read personal vows while separated in a corner of Donahue before we went down to the Chapel of Mary, which was a very emotional experience.”
Prior to their wedding ceremony, Thomas Grant '16 and Sara (Cannistraro) Grant '15 took advantage of the photo opportunities offered by Stonehill's scenic campus.
From Paris With Love
As a student, Thomas Grant '16 took advantage of various experiential learning opportunities offered by the College. The Holbrook, Massachusetts native interned in New York for a semester. He also studied abroad in London. These experiences not only served as valuable educational opportunities; they also paved the way for Grant’s introduction to Sara Cannistraro '15.
While living in the Big Apple, Grant interned with Emily Brain '15, a friend of Cannistraro. Upon returning to campus the following semester, Grant and Brain would get together to watch TV every week. Cannistraro often tagged along. During these hangouts, sparks flew between her and Grant.
“We took a quick liking to each other, and we started dating by the end of the semester,” the couple said.
We always knew we wanted to get married in a church for both ourselves and our families, and we couldn't think of a better spot than the chapel located at the place we first met.
A few weeks after their relationship began, Grant left for London. Fortunately, he and Cannistraro were able to make things work, despite their distance. After a couple months apart, the pair reunited in Paris, the city of love.
“We like to joke and say our first date was at the Eiffel Tower,” the couple said.
Since returning to the United States, their bond has remained strong through graduation, career beginnings and a global pandemic. They ultimately returned to campus on December 19, 2021, to get married after dating for several years.
“We always knew we wanted to get married in a church for both ourselves and our families, and we couldn't think of a better spot than the chapel located at the place we first met,” they said.

A Secret Spot
When Career Development Center Recruiting Coordinator Patrick McKeon ’13 and Molly (McCabe) McKeon ’13 first got engaged, they knew they wanted to get married somewhere they could form a close relationship with the priest officiating their wedding. Prior to their ceremony, held on June 8, 2019, the couple visited a few times with Rev. Matthew Fase, C.S.C., of Campus Ministry to discuss married life. They bonded with the cleric during these sessions.
“We appreciated the opportunity to return to Stonehill for Mass and meet with Fr. Matt for Pre-Cana,” the pair said. “He supported our journey from engagement to marriage in a really meaningful way.”
This journey culminated in a moment that brought everything full circle for the couple. After solidifying their union as husband and wife, the pair exited the Chapel of Mary and retreated to a campus location only they know about.
“Following our ceremony, we decided to read our own vows at the place we first said we loved each other on campus,” they said. “This was a really special moment for us, and it gave us time to pause and let everything sink in.”
