The Committee on Excellence in Teaching, representing Students, Faculty, and the Alumni Council, selects the outstanding teacher from those nominated by students and faculty members. The award is named in honor of one of Stonehill’s most accomplished teachers and the recipient stands as a symbol of the entire faculty’s commitment to teaching and academic excellence. At this 2020 Academic Convocation, Stonehill College is proud to bestow the Louise F. Hegarty Award for Excellence in Teaching on Professor Michael Mullen, Associate Professor In Business Administration.

While many outstanding professors are nominated for this prestigious award, few receive the number of impassioned nominations from students, alumni, and colleagues as Professor Mullen. His commitment to teaching excellence, mentoring, and student success is obvious in these words of students and faculty who nominated him for this recognition.

  • Since having Professor Mullen as both a professor and a club advisor, I’ve witnessed first-hand his passion for teaching and giving students the resources to succeed. He is extremely motivated by both the success and future happiness of students, and it’s evident in his lectures. My favorite aspect of Professor Mullen’s teaching is his ability to apply his teachings to not only textbook examples, but to his professional experience.
  • Professor Mullen embodies everything that Stonehill and its mission is about. He challenged me to be my best and changed my life. He truly cares about the academic and professional success of his students. His dedication to his students is apparent in the way the he conducts his courses and marathon review sessions, and the connections he provides students to the best opportunities in the industry.
  • Inside the classroom, Professor Mullen pushes all students to rise to the best possible work they can produce. His approach to ensuring that all students are grasping what can be a challenging subject begins with his high expectations, but is really centered around his commitment to helping students progress outside of the classroom. He is always available to discuss an assignment, a topic covered in that day’s lecture or anything else that a student needs help with. His goal is to drive students to succeed.
  • Professor Mullen has by far had the greatest impact on my learning at Stonehill both in and out of the classroom. He is an engaging professor who pushes his students to work hard and prepares them for work in the professional world. He is dedicated to making high-level learning available for all students and has created programs such as ENGAGE-the finance leadership program, the Financial Management Association, LAUNCH-the Women in Finance group, and the Skyhawk Investment Group, all which contribute to the academic, personal and professional growth of Stonehill students.

As his department chair noted, if we “define success by your impact on others” as we state on the Stonehill homepage, then excellence should be defined as our “sustained long-term, positive impact on others”. Mike has had a marked influence on the lives of the many Stonehill students who have been fortunate to have him as a teacher and a mentor. Alumni consider him to be one of the most influential people in their Stonehill College experience.

And so, it is with profound pride and gratitude that Stonehill today recognizes Professor Michael Mullen for his outstanding service to our students.
