Extensive Internship Program Provides Career Clarity, Networking
Stonehill's emphasis on internships empowers students to understand and drive their own career paths — from their first days here to long after graduation.
For students in 2026, undergoing career preparation before graduation is increasingly essential. And while there are numerous types of experiential education, the opportunity to intern in your field of interest still reigns supreme.
Stonehill’s Career Development and Experiential Education offices partner with students early and often, helping them connect their own interests and their academic pursuits to their professional goals.
“Career development is holistic,” says Andrew Leahy, director of Career Development at Stonehill. “We are not trying to just place students in jobs. A lot of what we do is coach students — how to message their skills and strengths, how to reflect and articulate, how to find people in a particular industry doing the work that they want to do.”
This approach empowers students to understand and drive their own career paths — from their first days at Stonehill to long after graduation.
Internships are at the core of Stonehill’s Experiential Education Guarantee. “At Stonehill, it’s a requirement that all students participate in some variety of experiential education before they graduate,” explains Christina Burney, executive director of Experiential Education. In addition to doing internships, students can also fulfill the requirement through studying abroad, service learning, an alternative spring break trip, or leadership on campus.
“Students have to go into these experiences with intention and reflect on them afterward,” Burney adds. “When they are in a job interview and the interviewer asks them about skills or experiences, our students have practice talking about that experience and those transferable skills.”
Timmy Grable ’22, now a senior software engineer at Capital One, found that many of the organizations where he sought an internship had a Stonehill alum on staff who could help advise him.
Alumni Support Supercharges Benefits
Equally important in Stonehill’s emphasis on internships is the College’s ever-expanding alumni network, whose members help students translate their internship experiences and skills to real opportunities. Timmy Grable ’22, now a senior software engineer at Capital One, credits Stonehill’s alumni connections with helping launch his career.
“I set a goal to apply to three internships a day during my junior year,” says Grable. In many cases, the companies he contacted had Stonehill alumni in software engineering roles. It's how he discovered Tyler Technologies, where he secured an internship that he says was invaluable to launching his career. “When I started at Capital One, I had a head start over other new graduates. I already knew the standard workflows, how the meetings would go and how to navigate a corporate environment.”
Such professional experiences not only give students an advantage when applying for highly competitive positions but also give them clarity on their career path. Madison McBroom ’22, a clinical exercise physiologist at Lee Health, interned at an outpatient cardiology office during her senior year. The hands-on experience in a clinical setting helped confirm her decision to follow that path. “Having internship hours and experience was extremely beneficial when applying to graduate programs,” McBroom says. “It increased my confidence in my career choice and provided meaningful context to what I’d been learning about.”
For Lorelie Murphy ’24, her internship experience provided more than technical know-how. “Stonehill helps you build skills all around,” says Murphy, who interned for two years at IDEMIA Civil Identity and is now an information security engineer at the company. “I learned new organizational and public speaking skills that gave me an advantage when applying for internships and jobs.”
She sees her internship experience as invaluable. “The experience from internships will prepare you for life after college,” she says. “Stonehill will mold you into a well-rounded individual, preparing you for all the opportunities that will come your way.”
