Dear Stonehill Alumni, Families, and Friends:

My name is Camila Zuluaga, and I’m a senior majoring in English with minors in Journalism and Business. I am also an International Student from Colombia, and I am proud to say Stonehill has become a second home.

One of the things I love most about Stonehill is the welcoming community I can’t say enough good things about. It’s a place where I’ve been able to grow both academically and professionally, but most importantly, as a human being. Stonehill outlined a clear path for me: a path of compassion and empathy, not only towards others, but also towards myself. Reason why it became a place of growth and support for me.

Outside of class, I’m involved in Varsity Tennis, Dance Club, English Society and Creative Writing club, which has helped me develop my skills in all that I am passionate about, like arts and sports, and pure creativity. This past summer I was an Orientation Leader, and I am also a Student Ambassador (Tour guide) and an editor for The Summit, which has allowed me not only to work on my skills, but also to learn and connect with everyone that nourishes the amazing community Stonehill has. I have truly enjoyed making it my purpose to show the magic Stonehill carries and passes year after year. In my free time, I enjoy sitting in the quad with a cup of coffee and my friends (especially when the weather is nice), reading a book outside of May, but most of all, I love running around the beautiful campus I am lucky to call mine.

After graduation, I hope to be able to have a career that allows me to write and connect with others, whether it’s in Journalism or something else. I want to continue learning from others and being able to share that as well. I aim to make a positive impact in the world, just as you’ve made a positive impact on mine.

Stonehill has helped me become a confident and dedicated person that believes in the good others can offer, and I’m now working toward my goal of sharing that with others through writing. I would like to end this letter by saying what I always say at the end of my tours: “I decided to stay in Stonehill, because the amazing community we have has made this place feel like home to me”.

Thank you for your kindness and generosity. I’m truly grateful for the support of donors like you, who make these experiences possible.

With appreciation,
Camila Zuluaga Rodriguez

Five Things About Me & My Stonehill Story

What is your favorite spot on campus and why?

The dining commons has become one of my favorite sports on campus. It has been a place where I have had some of the best laughs at school. It has also been a place for goodbyes because letting go of the good times is never easy to do. Me and my friends sat there for more than 3 hours after dinner, and none of us would be bored by it. The staff there is also amazing, I’ve heard all sorts of languages, and they will always give you a smile. Also, it has food...

What’s one class or professor that had the biggest impact on your journey—and why?

I met Professor Maureen Boyle in my first Journalism class. I came into the classroom thinking this type of writing was not for me, and that this was probably going to be my first and last class of Journalism. I think it is an understatement to say that she completely changed my mind. Her passion and patience make her a great professor, but her dedication and helping hand make her a great person. She never misses her students' talent and dedication and will encourage each and every one of us to pursue what we love. Thanks to her I found my passion for Journalism, and I am lucky to learn from someone as bright and dedicated as she is.

What’s something you’ve done at Stonehill that your high school self wouldn’t believe?

I don’t think I could’ve ever imagined me working as a tour guide and being an Orientation Leader. I never considered myself to be a good public speaker, which is why I love writing so much. When I first got my tour guide job, I was frightened. It has turned out to be the most enriching experience I have had in Stonehill. Thanks to that job I met amazing people that have encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone and try new things, including Orientation. I am happy to say that I have surprised my high school self and have become a confident communicator.

What would you like to say to someone who has contributed to your education?

Since I was 12, I had been dreaming of studying in the United States and playing tennis for a school. Everyone who has contributed to my education has made this dream reality and has made it so much more than I could have ever imagined. I have gotten the opportunity to try so many new things and meet people from all over the world. Most importantly, they have given me the chance to grow as a person, something I will forever cherish. I am grateful to say that that 12-year-old girl has seen a beautiful corner of the world called Stonehill.

What is one thing about Stonehill that instantly makes you smile?

There’s a lot of things that I could answer to this question, but I am going to say Sally. Sally is one of the people that works for dining. Every time I see her, she has a smile and knows almost every student. Her warmth and love for Stonehill is truly contagious, and once in a while she will come and sit with me while I eat. I could never ask for better company.
