The Events of Holy Week and Easter Are at the Center of Our Spiritual Tradition

April 17, 2014

Blessed Basil Moreau made the very bold claim that the Cross of Christ is our only hope: Ave Crux, Spes Unica! – Hail the Cross, Our Only Hope! We in the Congregation of Holy Cross profess this truth as the center of our spiritual tradition. It is not that Moreau was elevating this instrument of torture upon which Jesus suffered and died as worthy of praise, but that it was in and through the cross that the doors to salvation were blown open for all. In the Christian tradition, it is in and through the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ – which we commemorate and celebrate during the liturgies of Holy Week and the Octave of Easter – that redemption is made possible. It is with this understanding that the Cross is proclaimed by Moreau, and embraced by his followers, as our only hope.
