What is the Green Fund?

The Green Fund was started in 2012 by the Environmental Stewardship Council. It serves to provide funds to improve and encourage sustainability on campus. Each year the college allocates $8,700 for the green fund that can be used towards anything promoting sustainability.

Application Process

Students interested in applying for the green fund need only complete the application and submit it to Jessa Gagne, Energy Manager, by email at jgagne@stonehill.edu. The application will be reviewed by a sub-committee of the Environmental Sustainability Council.

Previous Green Fund Projects

  • Students for Environmental Action received funds from the green fund to invite sustainable band Melodeego to the fall 2012 sustainability fair. Melodeego uses student volunteers to ride stationary bikes which power their performance.
  • Residence Life hosted a Green Bingo program that received a $300 Green Fund grant for environmentally friendly prize purchases such as reusable containers, bags, cups and a kindle.
  • In January, students attended the Breaking Ground 2013 conference which provided students with the opportunity to gain campaigning skills, connect with other college students across the country, and hear stories about other campuses success, allowing for easier introduction of sustainable ideas on campus.
  • Students attended the Forward on Climate Rally in Washington, D.C. to stand up and tell President Obama the time to act on climate change is now.
  • Students used a Green Fund Grant to attend the Real Food Summit at Johns Hopkins University in February 2013. Committed to a healthier, greener, and fairer food system, they want to bring more real food to the College. At the summit, they learned how to work with our purchasing office and Sodexo on how to offer more real - local, fair and sustainable food options to diners at the College.
  • “Say No to Disposable To-Go” was an event hosted by students in the Commons to educate students about the negative impacts disposable containers have on the environment.
  • Another approved green fund funded project was to develop and test a prototype aquaponics system where crops and fish are grown together in a re-circling system.
  • Plastic beverage tumbler containers were purchased using the Green Fund and handed out at the sustainability fair to reduce the number of Styrofoam cups used at the Dunkin Donuts on campus.
  • Green Kits for the incoming students are purchased annually using the green fund and include a hand towel, pods laundry detergent, a to-go container, and a reusable straw all inside of a reusable bag.
