In Memoriam: John D. Hurley
The beloved professor devoted five decades to serving the Stonehill College community.
Stonehill College mourns the loss of Professor Emeritus of Psychology John D. Hurley, who passed away on Monday, August 17, at the age of 87.
“John Hurley was a thoughtful, kindhearted person who loved Stonehill College,” said President John Denning, C.S.C. “An exceptional educator, he inspired generations of students and colleagues through his mentorship and service to the institution. I am grateful for the countless ways he enriched our community and advanced its mission of light and hope.”
A clinical psychologist specializing in obsessive-compulsive and anxiety disorders, Professor Hurley worked at Stonehill for 53 years. Additionally, he drew upon his vast expertise while instructing residents at Massachusetts General Hospital and operating his own private practice.
Professor Hurley played an instrumental role in establishing Stonehill’s Department of Psychology, laying the groundwork for a program that has enabled students to explore human behavior and pursue meaningful careers.
In 2003, Professor Hurley received the College’s Louise F. Hegarty Award for Excellence in Teaching. Testimonials featured in the citation conferring this honor highlighted his commitment to student success.
One testimonial noted, “Professor Hurley is the epitome of the practitioner-teacher model. He is a talented, dedicated professional in the classroom. He is compassionate, yet challenging and humorous—quick to impart knowledge and to leave his students thinking about complex issues long after class has ended.”
Professor Hurley was the beloved husband of Judith Lillian (Hebb) Hurley. He was the devoted father of Christine Hunt ’95 and her husband Sean, and Leah (Hurley) Hamilton ’98. He was the loving grandfather of Addison and Gavin Hunt, and Chase and Sadie Hamilton.
“John Hurley’s remarkable tenure at the College spanned more than five decades, but his legacy cannot be measured simply in years,” said Peter Ubertaccio, vice president for academic affairs. “Stonehill is a better place because he chose, day after day, to bring his talents, his care for others and his sense of joy to this community.”
