Four Stonehill Students Are Semi-finalists for Renowned Fulbright Program

Four Stonehill students have been selected as semi-finalists for the prestigious Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA), affirming Stonehill College’s exceptional record of connecting graduates with highly selective national fellowships and scholarships.
The four Fulbright ETA contenders include an alumna and three Stonehill seniors.
- Andrea Duarte ’15, semi-finalist for Brazil
- Madalyn ‘Maddie’ Fernbach ’19, semi-finalist for Poland
- Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Potter ’19, semi-finalist for Greece
- Lauren Wallace ’19, semi-finalist for Bulgaria
In the previous four years, four students from the College have received a Fulbright ETA: Katherine Morelli ’16 and Alina Shklyarenko ’17, who taught in Germany, Elise Cavanaugh ’18, who taught in Taiwan, and Joseph Gale ’13, who taught in Turkey.
“An aspect that makes Stonehill students stand out in the application process is their time abroad — from semester-long study and internships to travel Learning Communities to service-immersion trips,” said Kris Silva, director of the Stonehill Service Corps. “Students gain a deeper global awareness from these invaluable and unique high-impact learning experiences. These experiences foster a yearning for more substantial cultural immersion after graduation.”
The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government. Each year, Fulbright funds nearly 2,000 U.S. citizens to teach, conduct research and provide expertise in more than 160 countries.
“Fulbrighters serve as ambassadors for the United States and conduits for greater mutual understanding of people, cultures and languages,” said Craig Kelley, associate provost for academic achievement. “It is a highly competitive and prestigious award, which they will be able to leverage in their future careers.”
The semi-finalists are competing with candidates from across the country. Their applications are reviewed within the respective host countries and final selections are expected to be made by the end of May.
