The History of Brother Mike’s

Brother Mike's Logo

Ask a group of alumni from 1970-2000 about a favorite campus memory, and at least one story about a night at Brother Mike’s will be shared.  Brother Mike's opened in April 1970 to provide a social hub for students — utilizing a recreation room in the basement of O'Hara Hall where students gathered for mixers, music, sporting events, or to play foosball. More recently, Brother Mike’s is known as a "Brother Mike's Night at The Hill," referring to its location in The Hill, which offers pool, flatscreen tv’s, special event programming, and pub-style food options.

According to Father Massaro, Brother Mike’s was established to provide students with a safe, on-campus option for gathering and socializing.  For alumni from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, Brother Mike’s was a popular destination for seniors in their final months of college, including the 100 Days and 50 Days celebrations.

I had a wonderful experience at Stonehill and feel indebted to the College that we were able to create a relaxed place for students to hang out.

A Challenge Grant to Endow the Brother Mike’s Leadership Scholarship

Several former directors of Brother Mike’s, including Stonehill Trustees Patricia (McCartan) Prue ’81 and Michael Herlihy ’83, have joined together to issue a challenge grant to endow the Brother Mike's Leadership Scholarship as a fitting tribute to "Brother Mike" himself, Rev. Mike Massaro, C.S.C. '77.

With lead gifts over $200,000, we invite you to contribute to the Brother Mike’s Leadership Scholarship, which will be endowed in perpetuity — providing a lasting tribute to Father Massaro.

The Brother Mike’s Leadership Scholarship will support academically-qualified students with demonstrated need who engage in campus programs and who take on leadership roles in ensuring a vibrant and healthy campus community for their classmates.

Brother Mike's Reunion

November 5, 2022
Over 100 alumni gathered on campus to pay tribute to Rev. Mike Massaro, C.S.C. ’77, the man whose vision was to create a safe, on-campus “social club.”

The Reunion drew alumni from all decades, allowing us to share memories and photos with classmates and other celebrants. Michele Lynch '77, in consultation with members of the Class of 1972 and 1976 shared a bit of history; Evan Turgeon '24, the inaugural Br. Mike’s Leadership Scholarship recipient, connected with attendees; Rev. John Denning, C.S.C. thanked us; and we raised a glass to Brother Mike and lots of good memories.

View event photos and read words of thanks from Evan Turgeon '24 below:

Thank you so much to anyone who was part of granting and offering me the Brother Mike’s Leadership Scholarship. I am greatly appreciative to have won this prestigious award and am honored to be the very first student recipient. After learning about the tremendous part that Brother Mike played at Stonehill, and his way out of the box thinking, I am quite inspired, and I plan to carry it on to the next part of my journey. I hope to make Brother Mike and all of you proud through my final years at Stonehill and on.

Making a Stonehill Education Accessible

Stonehill is dedicated to offering students an excellent — and affordable —living and learning experience. Through a robust scholarship endowment, the College is accessible to talented, deserving students from all backgrounds and traditions. The impact of a scholarship on a student’s academic journey is invaluable — lessening the debt burden, mitigating the rising cost of education, and providing more time to focus on academic study. Scholarships create a lasting legacy for our benefactors while also promoting a culture of philanthropy among the students who are the recipients of donor generosity.

As a Director of Brother Mike's, I was provided an invaluable opportunity to gain leadership and business skills. Equally important was meeting students both on and off campus that I would never have had a chance to meet if there wasn't a Brother Mike's where any student could go hang out, have fun and be part of a college community. I am very grateful for that experience.

Brother Mike’s represented a huge part of campus culture, employed many people, and gave Directors valuable business experience.

It was an absolute honor to serve on the board of Brother Mike’s for three years. So many lessons learned that I have been able to carry throughout my life and such fond memories of those I worked side by side with. They are and will remain in my heart forever.

Memories from Brother Mike's Directors and Staff

Terry Driscoll, Class of 1980

"Brother Mike's really helped make Stonehill a special place for a lot of people. It was a great place to get away and just relax."

Gregory Meallo, Class of 1981

“I had a D.J. shift at WSHL 91.3 Stonehill Rocking Radio on Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. Brother’s Mike’s would play WSHL on four loudspeakers, so I would take requests right from the bar via a pay phone outside the door. That year was one of the best of my life.”

Patricia (McCartan) Prue, Class of 1981

“Working at Brother Mike's was the best job to have on campus. We got to meet so many different students. It was the place to go, the center of it all.”

Thomas Malvesti, Class of 1999

“I worked there and was a master of the oasis machine."

Michael Close, Class of 2000

“I was one of the last bartenders/managers to close down Brother Mike’s in 2000.”

I donated to the Bro Mikes Scholarship. I was so thrilled when I got to be the Pizza Girl! When I came back after a semester in Ireland, it helped me connect back into Stonehill.
