Biography

Professor Tilley joined the chemistry department in 1996 after completing his Ph.D. from Indiana University. He earned B. A.'s in Chemistry and Russian Language from Grinnell College in 1990.

His Ph.D. research involved conductometric rate-constant, isotope effect, and NMR product studies of gamma- and delta-silyl substituted carbocations, as well as software design for a bipolar pulsed conductance instrument. He also spent the summer of 2000 as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Northeastern University and the summer of 2001 as a Visiting Investigator at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. He is actively engaged in undergraduate research at Stonehill College, and has had numerous undergraduate research students working with him on a variety of projects, funded by a variety of external and internal grants, including the SURE program.

He also teaches a variety of courses ranging from General Chemistry with a forensic theme to Organic Chemistry to Inorganic Chemistry. He is also interested in mineralogy and is an avid mineral collector.

We have several ongoing projects in two principal areas: 1) The application of gamma-silyl bridging toward the synthesis of strained hydrocarbon systems, and 2) The synthesis of novel oxoammonium ions and nitroxyl radicals and their potential application as green oxidants for oxidation of trifluoromethyl alcohols and other systems.  We are also developing novel synthetic methodologies in order to further our research in both of these areas.

Carbocations containing a gamma-silyl substitutent are known to be stabilized by a bridging, or "percaudal" interaction in which the back-lobe of the silicon-carbon bond overlaps with the developing carbocation p-orbital. Subsequent elimination (one possible pathway) of the gamma-silyl substituent leads to formation of a new (1, 3) bond.  We have found that carbocations destabilized by highly-electron-withdrawing groups (EWGs) in the position alpha to a leaving group undergo strong percaudal participation and almost exclusively follow the 1,3-elimination pathway.   We have taken advantage of this mechanism to form a variety of EWG-substituted cyclopropanes, as well as even more-highly strained EWG-substituted bicyclobutanes. We are currently exploring the scope of EWGs capable of directing this reaction.  Synthesis of the substrates for these reactions is also necessitating developing improved methodologies for precursor-reactions including conjugate addition of silyl groups and fluoroalkylation reactions of carbonyl compounds.

Our gamma-silyl elimination methodology has potential applications for synthesis of bicyclic systems that could serve as novel bioisosteres in pharmaceutical applications. We are also exploring the possibility of applying gamma-silyl elimination to synthesize even more highly strained systems such as tetrahedranes.  Such strained systems have potential applications as high-energy-density materials/fuels.

Our other project involves the development of novel oxoammonium salts and nitroxyl radicals.  4-(acetylamino)-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-oxo-piperidinium tetrafluoroborate, otherwise known as “Bobbitt’s salt,” is a heavy-metal-free, recyclable oxidant capable of undergoing a variety of oxidations, including oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes and ketones.  We are currently exploring the synthesis and characterization of modified versions of this system.  We are also interested in the nitroxyl precursors of these modified oxoammonium salts.  Nitroxyl radicals (also known as nitroxides) are unusual, stable radical species and themselves are also useful as oxidants (often catalytically in the presence of a co-ocidant) and also as biochemical spin-labels.

We are currently preparing and studying the electronic properties and oxidizing abilities of these modified compounds.  They have potential use for oxidation of trifluoromethyl alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds, or as unique spin-labels for probing a variety of biological systems.
