Employers working with the Career Development team, using Stonehill facilities or services, or posting in the College's Handshake database are required to follow several important guidelines and best practices, including those set by the National Association of Colleges and Employers' Principles of Recruiting and Employment - NACE Principles and the U.S. Internship Guidelines - US Department of Labor Internships Programs Under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Please refer to the links below for more information:

In addition, we will not approve positions that:

  • Require students to pay a fee, purchase supplies, or invest money
  • Are based in a private home, such as babysitters, personal care attendants and tutors
  • Do not align with school policy

The following practices are also strongly discouraged, as they may not promote a fair or productive recruiting environment:

  • Require students to solicit products or services on campus
  • Do not require a degree or seek candidates working toward a degree
  • Are lacking sufficient detail in the description

The Career Development Office at Stonehill College reserves the right to exclude any employer from recruiting activities and to edit, delete, or refuse any employer profile or job posting at any time in Handshake if they do not abide by the guidelines above.  Furthermore, the Career Development Office may do so in order to curate all recruiting events in an effort to ensure a variety of industries and opportunities are available for our students.

The Career Development Office at Stonehill College advertises programs, workshops, and information sessions held by external employers because they may be of interest to our students and alumni.  It is important to note that the posting of these events does not indicate the endorsement of the program, company, or organization by our office or the college.

The Career Development Office is a member of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and the Eastern Association of College and Employers (EACE).  We adhere to the "Professional Standards for Universtiy Relations & Recruiting" as published by NACE.

When extending employement offers, "The organization should identify a time frame that would be reasonable and appropriate for both the organization and candidates.  Providing ample time to the candidate not only helps ensure a reasoned decision, but also creates a positive impression of the organization; ultimately, this reduces retraction and lowers attrition rates."

In addition, "the organization should assess its use of offer deadlines to ensure that the deadlines are not placing undue pressure on the candidate.  Using financial incentives (i.e. signing bonuses) to pressure offer recipients to make a quick decision may have an adverse effect on the company's employer brand."

The Career Development team at Stonehill College recognizes there are competitive recruitment initiatives across all industries.  We must also recognize that many of our students are navigating the recruitment landscape for the first time.  They are diligently researching organizations and opportunities while connecting with our advisors and other campus mentors to evaluate next steps in their careers.

In the spirit of education, we encourage employers to provide a minimum of five business days as a timeframe for students to respond to an internship or job offer.  There may be occasions where students ask for an extension for a number of legitimate reasons.  For instance, during our exam periods:

  • Fall Semester 2025: Monday, December 8 - Friday, December 12
  • Spring Semester 2026: Monday, May 4 - Friday, May 8

As Career Advisors, we will encourage students to move expeditiously through their decision-making process.  We are committed to helping them, and you, through the recruitment pipeline so all parties feel confident moving forward together.
