About JED Campus

JED Campus is a nationwide initiative of The Jed Foundation (JED), designed to guide schools through a collaborative process of comprehensive systems, program and policy development with customized support to build upon existing student mental health, substance misuse and suicide prevention efforts.

Stonehill first worked with JED in 2011, when we utilized their comprehensive campus needs assessment and then received their JED Campus Seal for the work we did to address mental health with our campus community.

Over the years, the JED Campus program evolved and the services they offered schools grew. It is now a comprehensive four year strategic initiative that includes multiple assessment points, campus visits, focus groups and enhanced planning strategies.

In January 2019, Stonehill College joined this newer JED Campus initiative and  embarked on a multi-year strategic collaboration that not only assesses and enhances the work that is already being done but also helps create positive, lasting, systemic change in the campus community.

JED Campus 2019-2022 Initiatives:

The JED Campus Team worked in three sub-committees from 2019-2022.  The sub-committees had the following areas of focus: Identify Students At Risk and Increase Help Seeking Behavior; Social Connectedness; Policy.

Many goals were achieved in the implementation of the 2019-2022 JED Campus Team Strategic Plan.  Highlights include:

  • Pre- and Post- assessment via a self-assessment and administration of the Healthy Minds Study
  • Crisis numbers on the back of student ID cards
  • Implementation of the 24/7 Support Line (508-565-1331, Option 2)
  • Changes to medical withdrawal and medical absence procedures in line with JED Foundation recommendations
  • Increased signage about resources around campus
  • Development and marketing of the Red Folder Guide resource
  • A student mental health e-Learn site to support faculty in assisting students
  • Implementation of a mental health syllabus statement
  • Regularly occurring suicide prevention gatekeeper trainings (QPR, Recognizing and Responding to Student Distress, and targeted trainings for student leader groups)
  • JED Peer to Peer suicide prevention gatekeeper training at first year orientation
  • Enhanced social media marketing around mental health awareness, substance abuse awareness, and suicide prevention via Instagram (@stonehillcounselingservices, @stonehillhealthandwellness)

JED Campus Alumni 2022-2025

After completing the 4-year JED Campus program, Stonehill College is now a JED alumni campus.  Our JED Campus Team will continue its work utilizing ever-evolving knowledge and resources available to alumni campuses.  The Team is in the process of reviewing feedback from our post assessment completed in 2022 and brainstorming to develop new multi-year plan with strategic mental health initiatives.  If you are a current student, faculty, or staff member who would like to join the team during this planning stage, please reach out to Maria Kavanaugh (mkavanaugh@stonehill.edu).
