Student Leaders: At the annual Student Leadership Dinner, sponsored by W.B. Mason, 158 student leaders gathered in the Martin Institute recently. There they met and networked with many of the 100 Stonehill alumni who work for W.B. Mason. They also heard a lively presentation on the realities and requirements of leadership by the company’s President/CEO Leo Meehan ’75 who is also a College trustee. Career Milestone: Congrats to women’s basketball coach Trish Brown on her 300th victory, which came in the Skyhawk’s recent 71-64 overtime win at Franklin Pierce. In her 15th season at the helm, Brown joked after the milestone victory, “As my former boss at Harvard, Kathy Delaney-Smith, said, 'It just means you're old,' which I tend to agree with her.'' Joking aside, Brown credits her players and assistants over the years in helping her reach 300 career wins. “It's the program's 300th win and the people that have been in the program really deserve that credit for the milestone.” For more on Brown’s achievement, visit here.
Stonehill’s Top Chef: Based in the Dining Commons, Executive Chef Jocelyn Aurelien brings a global touch to campus cuisine. Born and raised in Haiti, he grew up helping his mother prepare Creole dishes and, given Haiti’s French heritage, he is versed in the art of classical cuisine. Working in Japan, he perfected his skill at arranging food to look beautiful while gaining a deep appreciation for the healthy nature of traditional Japanese meals. Chef Jocelyn keeps his meals simple but elegant and is focused on student diners and their health/dietary concerns. His first cooking class attracted more than 20 students and the Health & Wellness Office is working on a second one later this semester. For more on Chef Jocelyn, visit here.
Learning Differently: For some adolescents, middle school can be a tumultuous experience as the social and emotional challenges that come with it can be too overwhelming. To meet the needs of those students, Katy Shamitz ’99 has launched the Chapman Farm School, which is based on the South Shore and focuses on kids who learn a bit differently or need a smaller school where they feel understood. Euro Immersion: Based in Budapest last semester, Paige Van Valkenburgh ’17 immersed herself in learning the Hungarian language, studying the political and historical legacy of Communist rule in Eastern Europe and encountering the refugee situation that is challenging so many European countries today. Currently interning at the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., the political science and international studies major wants to attend law school after graduation and return to Budapest to become more fluent in Hungarian.
