Christian Martin was born in France, where he completed his undergraduate education. He wrote his doctoral thesis on the critic Roland Barthes. His interests include semiotics, theory of literature, French and Francophone culture and French films. His is the author of a book on an influential French critic, Roland Barthes et l’ëthique de la fiction, as well as research articles on topics ranging from the medieval poet Marie de France, Ronsard, and Baudelaire, to modern ethnography.

Professor Martin teaches all levels of French language, French and Francophone literature and culture. He is currently working on a critical edition of Jean Bodin’s “Demonomania of Witches” a Renaissance treatise on the prosecution of witches by a famous French political thinker and jurist.
