The Massachusetts Association for Professional Law Enforcement (MAPLE) is an organization of current, former and retired police officers and criminal justice educators, who are deeply concerned about the state of American policing.  We have organized to help elevate the quality and effectiveness of the police service in Massachusetts by informing public policy makers and the general public as to the issues impacting police integrity, legitimacy and public perception. This panel will introduce MAPLE and its mission, discuss the current and initial policing problems in the state that spurred MAPLE’s creation, and explain MAPLE’s proposed solutions. There will also be a discussion on the impending legislation to reform policing in Massachusetts - creation of the Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) authority, use of force, training, and qualified immunity.
