Program Overview

The Health Science degree is for students interested in allied health professional careers such as nurse/nurse practitioner, physical therapist, and physician assistant. This major, which typically leads to graduate and professional school programs, prepares our students to successfully begin the journey of building a career in the growing field of health care.

Clinical Experiences

Stonehill health science students gain clinical experience in a wide variety of ways. Many volunteer in hospitals, clinics and private practices, and some have become EMTs.

Nutrition

HSC 218
An introduction to nutritional biology. Topics include: nutrients and their role in growth, development, health and disease treatment.

Clinical Epidemiology

HSC 276
Epidemiology is the science of measuring the distribution of diseases in a population, uncovering factors that influence those distributions, and evaluating health interventions. Clinical Epidemiology will introduce you to the fundamental concepts of epidemiology and demonstrate application through the lens of relevant health issues. Furthermore, you will develop literacy in genetic and molecular approaches of modern epidemiology that elucidate the impact of gene-environmental interactions on health and trace the transmission and evolution of disease-causing agents.

Understanding Health Disparities (WID)

HSC 350
This course involves an exploration of the social factors that influence the distribution and treatment of illness in society. The class will also include a critical examination of the U.S. healthcare system and the evolution of the doctor-patient relationship in our society. In addition, we will explore factors that increase an individual's risk for health issues such as culture, gender, race and the environment. You will be presented with cross-cultural views on a variety of health problems, and you will be expected to come prepared to think critically about these problems and to participate fully in class discussions.

Capstone Clinical Internship in Health Science

HSC 470
The Clinical Internship Capstone course will provide Health Science majors with a rich clinical and research experience related to their area of clinical interest. The clinical internship may be taken for one semester Junior year, the summer between Junior and Senior Year, or Senior year; or 112 hours of relevant clinical experience (e.g. volunteering and/or shadowing in hospitals, clinics, private practices, working as an EMT or CNA, etc.) An accompanying in-depth research paper is required as part of the Capstone.

Stonehill College has developed academic affiliations with colleges and universities that enable our students to augment the degree they earn at Stonehill with graduate and undergraduate degrees that further enhance their opportunities.

Earn Two Degrees in 5 Years

The Skyhawk Accelerated Dual Degree allows Stonehill students to earn a bachelor's degree and master's degree from Stonehill College in five years. Eligible students receive early and expedited admission to their graduate program of interest and can begin working toward a master's degree in education, data analytics or marketing during their senior year.
