Full-time Accelerated Special Education Program (12 months)

Part-time Special Education Program

  • Spring - Application Deadline: November 15
  • Summer - Application Deadline: April 15
  • Fall - Application Deadline: April 15

Program Prerequisites

  • Child Development course
  • Math Content and Pedagogy course or equivalent*
  • Reading Theory and Pedagogy course equivalent*

A child development course or equivalent completed with a grade of B or better, prior to admission. (both formats) 

*Please note that students will also be required to show proof of having completed coursework in math content and pedagogy as well as in reading theory and pedagogy. *Coursework may be waived with passing MTEL scores in the Math subtest of the General Curriculum MTEL and on the Foundations of Reading MTEL.

Accelerated students must complete prerequisite requirements prior to admission. Part-time students are encouraged to complete these prior to admission.

Written Personal Statement

The purpose of this statement is to give insight into your level of motivation, sense of purpose in pursuing a master's degree in Special Education, writing skills, and personal/professional communication style. Care in preparation of your personal statement is strongly encouraged since it is an important part of the Admission Committee's review process.

The Written Statement should be 3-5 pages in length and address the following in narrative format:

  1. Describe your professional goals and how the master's degree in special education at Stonehill College will help you achieve them.
  2. Reflect on any relevant work and educational experiences and describe how you would contribute to the program and to the profession.
  3. Describe how your personal and professional experiences have influenced and prepared you to seek admission to the master's degree in special education leading to initial licensure.
  4. Provide any additional information that you think would be helpful to the admission committee.

Letters of Recommendation

You will be asked to identify two recommenders in the application portal under the recommendation section. This will generate a link and an email notification will be sent from the online application portal with a recommendation request.

Submit recommendations from individuals with whom you have worked closely in a professional or academic setting, written within the last two years.

  • At least one of these recommendations should come from a present or former supervisor.
  • For applicants currently in school, or recent graduates, the second recommendation should be academic in nature.

Please include an updated Resume and/or CV. Upload your resume via the application portal.

Submit Official Transcripts

Official Transcripts must be mailed directly to Stonehill from an accredited undergraduate institution from which you earned a Bachelor’s degree. Additionally, we require transcripts from any post-baccalaureate or graduate coursework that you have completed.

If your transcript is not in English, please provide a notarized translation of the original transcript.

If you’re enrolled in a degree program when you apply, submit your transcript of the courses you’ve taken to date. You will be required to provide a final official transcript once you’ve completed the degree program. The admission committee may also choose to request a mid-semester assessment of course work in progress.

Your transcripts need to be:

  • Conferred by regionally accredited colleges or universities
  • Original documents bearing the official institutional stamp
  • Received by the Office of Graduate Admission in envelopes sealed by the sending institution, or sent electronically directly from the institution

Additional Requirements

While we do not require that applicants take a standardized exam for admission into the graduate program, score reports from the GRE, GMAT and other standardized tests may be submitted.

  • A Foreign Credential Evaluation- We require a foreign credential evaluation for any candidate who earned a degree from an institution located outside of the U.S. Please use World Education Services (WES): www.wes.org or Center for Educational Documentation (CED): www.cedevaluations.com. We require a Course by Course evaluation.

  • Proof of English Proficiency- If you are an International Student and English is not your native language we require a TOEFL, IELTS or a comparable score.

    Stonehill will seek candidates with a TOEFL score of 90 or greater or an IELTS of 7.0 to assure sufficient preparation for the academic challenge of the program.  Additionally, the college will consider candidates sub-scores to assure sufficient preparation among all measures of English proficiency.

    While U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents whose native language is not English are not required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS, applicants are welcome to do so to better demonstrate their English proficiency.
