The Center for Academic Achievement

Center for Academic Achievement at Stonehill College

Philosophy

We believe in providing educational opportunities which foster an eagerness to learn and contribute toward a lifelong love of learning for all Stonehill students.

We recognize that students learn at different rates, via different modalities. To that end, we provide effective peer-facilitated review sessions for historically difficult courses and offer a collaborative environment for students to assimilate course material with effective study skills.

We also believe that good students (tutors) can model appropriate learning behavior for other students (tutees). Peer tutors, undergraduate Teaching Assistants, and Shields Scholar Mentors can empathize with students who are learning new concepts and facing the challenges of college life.

Academic Support Options

Teaching Assistants

Undergraduate Teaching Assistants (TAs) are selected by their Faculty because of their outstanding mastery of the course material. TAs provide supplemental instruction through weekly review sessions, exam preparation, skill evaluation and training.

Tutors

Tutors provide content tutoring in specific courses. They are available to meetone-on-one with students.

Shields Scholars Mentors

These "generalist" tutors provide one-on-one tutoring for most of the courses offered in the first and second years of study. They also assist students in study skills development, time management and test preparation. The Shields Mentors focus on the individual student by helping him/her develop a plan for academic success.
