Ecology and Ethics in Action Learning Community
At Stonehill College, Learning Communities (LC's) are two classes enrolling a common cohort of students that are linked during an academic term around an interdisciplinary theme.
Instructors work collaborative to plan theme-related events and activities outside of the classroom, providing an engaging and interactive context for teaching and learning. With some exceptions, students are encouraged to enroll in an LC in their sophomore year.
A hallmark of Stonehill's Cornerstone Program since the fall of 2002, LC's emphasize critical thinking and problem solving, and many incorporate short-term travel, experiential learning, or community-based learning.
Learning Communities exemplify Stonehill's commitment to create a student-centered climate that promotes academic challenge, cooperative learning, and authentic community.
ABOUT THE COMMUNITY
The integrative seminar of this LC builds on the Principles of Environmental Science and Environmental Ethics courses. Students conduct ecological studies while exploring the ethical dimensions of the development of South Florida and the current restoration of the Everglades.
WHO'S INVOLVED
Sue Mooney, Associate Professor, Biology and Director of the Environmental Studies Program, taught the Environmental Ethics course. Mooney co-facilitated the Integrative Seminar with Gregory Maniero, Assistant Professor of Biology. Maniero taught the Principles of Environmental Science course. Karen Talentino, (former) Dean of Faculty and Professor of Biology, and Richard Grant, Assistant Dean and Director of Academic Services also led the trip.
