Professor Knowlton is a Modern European Intellectual Historian, with a background as well in English and Classics.

His research is concerned with the history of the philosophy of language, and his teaching is informed by an interest in the ways in which language is used to do history.

He has particular interests in The Histories of Herodotus, the first written history in the tradition; and the history of England, about which there has been so much history written.
