Professor Hegarty has over fourteen years of experience conducting financial fraud investigations in the private industry and for the federal government. He currently serves as a Special Agent in the Department of Defense where he conducts investigations involving contractor fraud, public corruption, terrorism, and illegal exports.

While working at Deloitte & Touche, Hegarty provided litigation support to large law firms. For the Department of Justice, he worked on high-profile health care fraud cases which resulted in recoveries over $2 billion. Professor Hegarty also served on the Big Dig Task Force which investigated fraud, waste and abuse on Boston’s Central Artery Tunnel project. Hegarty has testified in numerous grand juries and criminal trials.

An Adjunct Faculty member since January 2007, Professor Hegarty developed a course in fraud examination and forensic accounting. He has a special interest in assisting students with finding internships in investigative agencies. Hegarty is married and lives in Needham with his wife and three young children Catherine, John, and Michael.
