Monday Morning Update
June 18, 2012
Healthcare Alumni: Over the last two decades, Canton-based MEDITECH has hired more than 100 Stonehill alumni, especially healthcare administration majors. Responsible for the company's college recruitment Greg Clarkin '01 is doing his best to see that number grow and to strengthen the ties between Stonehill and the healthcare software company. To learn why so many alumni are flocking to MEDITECH and why the company is eager to hire them, visit here.
Senate Race: For insight on the Senate race between incumbent Scott Brown and challenger Elizabeth Warren, the Huffington Post recently turned to Politics Professor Peter Ubertaccio. In the article, Ubertaccio wrote that while Massachusetts politics tilt to the left, the state also defies conventional wisdom in some key areas. That means Brown, if he is to win, has to rely on his personal appeal and his ability to woo groups like Reagan Democrats to vote for him. To read the Huffington Post article, visit here.
Bold Idea: Last summer, Marquis Taylor '06 launched a program called Coaching for Change, which gives at-risk high school students the tools to be active leaders in their communities through coaching. Just over a year later, Taylor's innovative initiative has been hailed as a "bold idea" by the nonprofit organization Echoing Green, which named the former Skyhawk basketball star as one of its 2012 Black Male Achievement Fellows. Taylor will receive a $70,000 stipend over the next 18 months to help him develop Coaching for Change. To learn more about the award and Taylor's leadership in addressing big social issues, visit here.
Crime Fiction: On his debut as a mystery writer with The Charlestown Connection, Tom MacDonald '80 recently captured The Best First Novel Prize at the Next Generation Book Awards, the publishing world's Sundance. The director of social ministries at a parish in Charlestown, MacDonald is writing a sequel. A busy man, he keeps index cards in his pocket and writes ideas on them as they come to him in the day. At night, when he has time, he reviews his notes to see if there is something there he can use in his stories.
All Gifts Matter: As the fiscal year ends on June 30th, Stonehill College Fund Chair Jacquelyn Tracy '88 reminds alumni & friends that all gifts, regardless of size, make a difference to help Stonehill students and faculty. Last year, alumni who made gifts in the $10 to $250 range raised more than $200,000 in support of our educational mission. It's not too late to make a gift. To do so, call 508-565-1344 or visit here.
Splendid Spain: The sixth installment of the Alumni Travel Program, The Splendors of Spain, will feature an eleven-day exploration of the country's culture, art, cuisine and history with visits to Madrid, Barcelona, Toledo, Seville, Valencia, and Granada.
