Monday Morning Update

April 23, 2012

Commencement: Alumnus Daniel Conley, the Suffolk County District Attorney, will deliver the key note address at the College's 61st Commencement on Sunday, May 20. A 1980 graduate, Conley will be joined by business executive and trustee William Devin '60, homeless advocate Dr. James Joseph O'Connell III and caregiver Mother Margaret Regina as honorary degree recipients. From Harvard to Stonehill: At present, Cheryl McGrath is the Head of Access Services for the Widener and Lamont libraries of Harvard College Library. As of July, however, she will be the new Director of the MacPháidín Library at Stonehill. For more on McGrath and her appointment, visit here.

Eat Local: Fresh, seasonal and direct from the farm, locally-sourced food can taste divine and it can have health, economic and environmental benefits as well. To make these and other points, four students in the Food Justice Learning Community will be presenting a locally-sourced dinner in the Dining Commons on Wednesday. Working with Sodexo chefs, they will serve a baked stuffed apple, from the Lanni family farm in Lunenburg, with a local maple vinaigrette. From 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the students will promote the virtues of local food with free tasty samples to entice diners to savor the full meal. Bon Appétit.

St. Francis: In conjunction with Earth Day, which was yesterday, the Environment Stewardship Council (ESC) will host a Sustainability Fair in the Dining Commons at lunch today. One goal is to promote the St. Francis Pledge of the Catholic Climate Covenant, which is a commitment by those at Catholics colleges to live their faith by protecting God's creation and advocating on behalf of people in poverty who face the harshest impacts of global climate change. Leading by example will be President Mark Cregan, C.S.C. '78 who will sign the pledge on behalf of Stonehill when he visits the Fair. One of many Earth Day events, the Fair will feature more than 20 tables staffed by student groups, offices and vendors.

Senior Designers: Currently on display at the Cushing-Martin Gallery is the work of 12 of our graduating graphic design majors. In past years, the Graphic Design Annual solely highlighted the seniors' completed works but this year, the students wanted to reinforce the concepts behind their work. Showcasing not only their final products, this year they are also presenting their initial problems, the creative process they took and the solution at which they arrived. On display until April 27, the exhibit features publications, packages, websites, motion graphics, promotional design items, and more, all designed by the 12 students. For more, visit here.
