Educator in the Faith: Biology Professor Maura Tyrrell is one of nine recipients of the 2011 Spirit of Holy Cross Award, given by the Congregation of Holy Cross to collaborators who serve with the U.S. Province of Priests and Brothers. Professor Tyrrell is known for being a knowledgeable scientific professor and an educator in the faith who values the College's Catholic identity and works to maintain and deepen it. In her 36 years at Stonehill, she has always worked to educate both the heart and the mind, a key principal for Holy Cross founder Blessed Basil Moreau, C.S.C. Transforming Travis: Dogged by aimlessness, Travis Kumph '10 almost dropped out twice during his freshman year. It was not until he traveled 4,000 miles to a poor neighborhood in Lima, Peru on Stonehill's alternative spring break HOPE trip that he found a passion that engaged him - service. Since then, he has returned to help the people of Canto Grande five times. His story has attracted the attention not just of a publisher but also of a documentary company that wants to highlight his service example. Business Honor: Marketing major, Lindsay Martin '12 is one of only two national recipients of a scholarship from the Delta Mu Delta International Business Honor Society. Winner of the $2,000 Mildred R. Marion Award, Martin is the first Stonehill student to earn such a scholarship since 2004. In addition to Delta Mu Delta, she is a member of the Lambda Epsilon Sigma Honor Society and a teaching assistant for Professor of Business Administration Geoff Lantos. For more, visit here.
Beyond the Bottle: At the urging of students concerned about the environmental effects of bottled water, Stonehill is working to phase out unnecessary spending on bottled water and to increase the availability of tap water on campus. Activism Club students successfully argued that bottled water wastes energy and undermines public confidence in tap and public water. For more, visit here.
