Pre-Tenure Retreat 2010
2010 Pre-Tenure Retreat Schedule
Friday, May 21, 2010
1:00 - 4:00 pm
1:00 Introductions/Reflecting on the past year
We'll kick off the afternoon with some conversations about the past year. To help frame the discussion, we'll ask you to share a teaching "critical incident" you've had this year - whether in the classroom or out of it. Perhaps it is related to something you said or did in response to a student or class, or an assignment that was particularly successful (or disastrous!), about which you continue to reflect.
You might give some thought to what incident you'd like to share before Friday.
2:00 Crafting your tenure statement
Then we'll look at some examples of tenure statements and talk about what you can be doing now to make it easier to craft your own statement when the time comes.
3:00 Q&A Panel
To conclude the afternoon, two faculty members who recently went through the tenure process (Scott Cohen, English & Marilena Hall, Chemistry), and two department chairs (Tom Gariepy, Health Care Administration & Mike Tirrell, Psychology) will share their suggestions - and answer your questions - about navigating the tenure track.
5:00 Barbeque (RFK Grove)
You and your families are then welcome to join us for a barbeque to celebrate the end of the year. We'll be in the RFK Grove (behind the Old Student Union building) with hamburgers, vege burgers, and hot dogs.
In case of rain, we'll move over to the Cleary Dining Room.
