American University allows students to finalize their own internship placement. The University provides accepted students with access to its online database, which lists hundreds of opportunities at any given time. Upon arrival in Washington, student are also invited to participate in American's Internship Bazaar, which offers the opportunity to meet with potential employers face-to-face.

Students receive 15 or 16 credits distributed as follows:

  • 4 Credits: Part-time internship in the student's major department pending the approval of the department faculty moderator. Students will work two days per week for fourteen weeks.
  • 8 Credits: Two seminars consisting of weekly meetings with decision-makers and experts in the field. Students work under the guidance of a full-time American University faculty member.
  • 4 Credits: Research project. Students choose an intensive research project relevant to Washington D.C.

OR

  • 3 Credits: Elective class. Students may select an elective class from a variety of fields at American University.

Housing is provided either on the Tenleytown campus of American University or in apartment-style housing near Capitol Hill. Both locations are conveniently located to public transportation.
