Charles M. Altieri Citation - President's Award for Excellence
June 03, 2011
For almost 50 years, you have been a leader in the local construction industry. Thanks to your acumen as an entrepreneur, your understanding of construction from the ground up, and your ethical approach to business, Auburn Construction is among the most respected companies in the Commonwealth today.
Your success, of course, was hard won. You learned your trade from your father, spending many hours in his basement building a wall, and then knocking it down only to start over building it again. Practice made perfect and you absorbed the important lesson of attending to the details and mastering them.
One of the earliest projects that you worked on as an apprentice bricklayer was here at Stonehill. In 1948, the first year of our existence, with your father, you helped to construct one of the first buildings commissioned by the College.
Many years later in the 1970s, when you had established your own business, you returned and oversaw the construction of an addition to that structure, which was named Merkert-Tracy. And, just last year, Auburn Construction renovated Merkert-Tracy from an out-of-date science center to a modern office building.
Over the years, the list of Altieri-Auburn projects at Stonehill is impressive - the Chapel of Mary, Stanger Hall, the Sports Complex, countless student residences, W. B. Mason Stadium, and many renovations - Donahue Hall, Duffy Academic Center, the College Center, the Clock Farm and the Mall.
Our theme tonight is The Building of Stonehill and, as we reflected, we realized that your contribution to the development of this campus has been enormous. You attend to the details. Your word is your bond and you always deliver quality and professionalism. But more than that, you have invested your heart and soul into each Stonehill project. You share our history and care about our future in a very personal way.
Because you have been such a part of how our campus has blossomed and because you bring such passion and integrity to the art of construction, Stonehill College is proud to present you with the President's Award for Excellence.
Given this second day of June in the year two thousand and eleven.
