Dr. Katie Nolin earned her B.A. in Biology with concentration in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Skidmore College in 2002. While at Skidmore College, she worked in the laboratory of Dr. Christina Eddy studying the genetics of the bacterium, Zymomonas mobilis and in the laboratory of Dr. Corey Freeman-Gallant studying the variation and organization of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in the Common Yellowthroat, Geothlypis trichas. In 2007, Dr. Nolin earned her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics from Stony Brook University. In graduate school she worked in the laboratory of Dr. Janet Leatherwood. Her graduate research focused on the effects of checkpoint mutations on DNA replication and re-replication in the fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe.

Research Interests:
Dr. Nolin has collaborated with Drs. Diane and Bob Peabody whose main research interest is the life cycle of the honey mushroom, Armillaria gallica. Dr. Nolin has worked with summer research students to develop a method to transform the honey mushroom with DNA. Successful transformation of the honey mushroom with fluorescent proteins would allow us to track hyphal growth from two competing honey mushroom isolates. Most Recently, Dr. Nolin has collaborated with Dr. Medin whose main research interest is dengue pathogenesis. Dr. Nolin has worked with undergraduate students to express individual dengue viral proteins in eukaryotic cell lines and observing cytokine and chemokine production in the transfected cells.
