Stonehill Roommates Reunite in Afghanistan

July 20, 2010

If, in their senior year, John McKee '86 and Bill Gormley '86 had told their Political Science Professor George Gallant that in 25 years, they would be working alongside soldiers from a former communist nation, Poland, he would have told them they were crazy.

Yet, that's exactly what the two Manchester House roommates are doing. Today, lieutenant colonels McKee and Gormley are stationed at Forward Operating Base Ghazni in Afghanistan, which is primarily run by Polish troops along with a small group of American military.

At the Forward Operating Base, Gormley serves at Team Leader of a Human Terrain Team researching Afghan culture and activities. McKee is a Detachment Commander for an Information Operations Team attached to the 101st Airborne Division charged with influencing the population to support the government of Afghanistan.

In an email message to the College, McKee wrote, "We encourage our friends from year groups 1985 thru 1987 to write to us here either by email or snail mail."
