April 29, 2010

For the second consecutive year, the men's and women's tennis teams have earned bids to the NCAA Tournament, which will begin on Thursday, May 6. It marks the sixth appearance in program history for the men and the fifth for the women.

The sixth-seeded men's team, making its fifth straight appearance, will face Bentley in opening round action hosted by Queens College. The fourth-seeded women's team, making its second straight appearance, will host one of two East Regionals and will open play against fifth-seeded Goldey-Beacom College.

Winners of six of its last seven after being edged by Merrimack in the Northeast-10 Semifinals last week, the men's team is led by senior Michael Mashkevich (pictured below), a two-time first team All-Northeast-10 Conference performer at No. 2 singles and junior Tim Fayed, the 2009 NE-10 Player of the Year and a three-time All-Conference performer.

The Stonehill women will be seeking their second-straight trip to the "Sweet Sixteen" after making their first trip last spring. Winners of eight of their last nine matches after a 5-2 setback to Southern New Hampshire in the NE-10 Championship, they are led by a trio of first team All-Conference honorees at the bottom of their lineup.

Sophomore Sarah Hickey is a perfect 34-0 over her collegiate career in singles play, including a 14-0 clip this season at No. 4 singles. First-year Paige Frost (pictured above) is unbeaten at 16-0, including a 12-0 mark at No. 5 singles. Classmate Chelsea Haedrich has posted a 12-1 singles record this season, including a 9-1 ledger at No. 6 singles.
