Faculty Members Release New Books
February 25, 2010

This week, Visiting Lecturer for the Visual Arts Department Colleen Ellis released her book ABCing: Seeing The Alphabet Differently, while on March 15, History Professor Shane Maddock will release his book, Nuclear Apartheid: The Quest for American Atomic Supremacy from World War II to the Present.
In her book, Ellis uses the alphabet to help readers better see and understand the visual world, especially the relationship between the figure and the ground. As she explains, it is "not just about the ‘a,' but also about the space in which the ‘a' exists." Ellis uses single Roman letters as narratives to introduce fresh ways of visualizing, thinking and talking about art and design. The Boston Sunday Globe has hailed the book as "thoroughly inventive." An academic expert on nuclear power, Maddock's book traces the history of a U.S. nuclear policy which sought to establish America as the sole nuclear power in the world. Maddock describes the ideology driving United States nuclear policy as being rooted in American exceptionalism, irrational faith in the power of technology, and racial and gender stereotypes.
